The Programme Committee for the second SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference and Exhibition has started selecting the top 140 submitted industry papers for presentation at this year’s international event in Moscow. The 2013 committee includes both Russian and international specialists from key countries with interests in the Arctic.

Papers selected for the SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference, which takes place on October 15-17 at the All Russia Exhibition Centre in Moscow, will support the theme, “Science and Industry Collaboration for Crossing Arctic Frontiers.” The conference content will focus on E&P technology for the Arctic and High North. In particular topics include:

•    Arctic and High North Oil and Natural Gas Potential—Conventional and Unconventional
•    Geology and Geophysics Technologies in Arctic and Harsh Environments
•    Drilling and Well Construction Technology
•    Oil Spill Prevention and Emergency Response in Ice-Filled Waters
•    Offshore and Onshore Field Development Including Subsea Production Systems and Intelligent Field Concepts
•    Site Investigation
•    HSE and Social Responsibility

The SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference and Exhibition  builds on the success of it’s inaugural event in 2011, which drew 1,400 exhibition attendees and 500 conference delegates from 26 countries.

“The Arctic shelf seems like a promising region but at the same time difficult in terms of accessibility,” said Programme Committee Member, Marat Mansurov, Director of the Offshore Oil and Gas Center , VNIIGAZ.  “Harsh, ice-covered waters require new technical solutions. In this context, events like the SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference and Exhibition become a platform for sharing of experience.”

“What is most useful is that, as an SPE Conference, (the event) will attract scientists and engineers, as opposed to the more general audiences attracted by other Arctic conferences,” Committee Member, Han Tiebout, Manager of Product Development, GustoMSC B.V., said.

Alexander Zharov, Rosneft’s Manager of Exploration, in the Geological Exploration and Licensing Department added that “these (SPE) events are important as they provide an opportunity to share experiences and learn new solutions.”

The event will also feature a Technology Incubator exhibition area to showcase innovative and small businesses in the industry. Also planned is a student paper contest and other smaller events for young professionals.

Confirmed sponsors so far include Schlumberger, Chevron, Total and Superior Energy Services.
